Tritonal at Emo's East

I could do this every weekend.

Tritonal, the triumphant Austin trance duo, played a homecoming concert at Emo’s East late last night.

More than 1,700 fans showed up. They were greeted by an extraordinary digital light show in the renovated and elevated former Back Room. (The name of the interim club escapes me.)

The old heavy metal spot never sounded this good. But then again, electronic dance music requires a different set of ears.

Two acts, one from Finland, the other from Germany preceded Tritonal. Their hour-long sets got the crowd bouncing and waving closer to the stage, which now rises from the north wall.

Chad Cisneros and Dave Reed revved up the energy level when they started spinning after midnight. They rarely gave the dancing, shouting, humming mob a chance to slow down.

Their followers are strikingly varied, though they skewed younger than this AARP candidate Saturday. The Tritonal appeal cuts across ethnic, sexual and economic lines, which I’m happy to say is often the case at Austin nightclubs.

Furries, elves and light-wielding ravers stalked the floor.

Don’t get the wrong idea. Your social columnist experienced ecstasy without the help of MDMA.

All it takes is the right music and the right opportunity to dance.

Where is that possible in Austin on a regular basis?
