A European can be forgiven for thinking the Emancipation Proclamation happened almost yesterday in 1863. My countrymen tend to gloss over such things when the cause is good and the affair is fun. So we cheered Citizen Generation’s date auction at the Ballet Austin studios on Friday night.

The place was packed and the pretty people were well lubricated by the time we arrived. When I say “pretty” I mean almost to the point of “peacocky.”
But always sweet when greeted, which is my litmus test for a superabundance of attitude. I found none here.
My friend delighted in politeness and openness of these relatively young Austinites raising money to benefit the Center for Child Protection.

The auction action turned raucous, but never offensive. Most “dates” presented themselves and their charity date packages — food, drinks, spas, etc. — tastefully.
Long may Citizen Generation reign! What a perfect antidote for youthful ambivalence about philanthropy.
