We talked of opera. But oh so much more. Food. Nightlife. Formula One. Indeed, there was much to be said about the United States Grand Prix during the Opening Night Dinner for Austin Lyric Opera.

As luck would have it, I sat with Wendi and Brian Kushner. All the guests around our convivial table contributed to the conversation, but I fell in especially with David and Sylvia Jabour. Among Austin’s most astute observers of nightlife, the family owners of Twin Liquors had much to say about the evening’s event, but also about the bigger social attraction at week’s end.

The conclusion: Nobody knows what to expect. Even professional watchers of the social scene can’t tell what will click and what won’t during Formula One.

Meanwhile, the opera backers at the Kodosky Lounge radiated good will and good sense. They have a new general manager and a skilled artistic director. They are in the black and at home in a new office. They are confident Austin Lyric Opera’s best days are ahead.
After our repast, we filed into the Long Center for “Pagliacci.”
